Since discovering essential oils six years ago, I’ve kept my eyes open and ears pricked for information about this long-buried God-given plan for health care. I continue to find biblical references to healing oils, but recently I’ve heard interviews with a number of secular scientists doing research into the purpose and power of scent. I LOVE seeing the scientific evidence behind the experiential truth I already know.
Last week on NPR’s Science Friday, two professors from Columbia and NYU discussed the Science of Smell. Here are a few slightly edited quips:
• “The olfactory cortex is enveloped by parts of the brain that are important for emotion and memory. There are direct reciprocal connections between the olfactory system and the amygdala and hippocampus, these parts that are important for emotion and memory. So the brain and the cortex are listening to the emotions that I’m having as I’m smelling and become an integral part of the percept itself.”
• “I may not pay too much attention to the smells of summer, and then five years from now, I smell an odor and get all of the other memories associated with that.”
• “One of the really interesting features of that memory connection is that in olfaction, the memories always tend to have a very strong emotional quality to them.”
I wanted to call in and suggest that perhaps they should consider—and research—the connection between scent and emotional healing…..
