Oil Standards

Perfection

In America, essential oils are governed by the perfume industry. This means that legally, if a bottle contains only one drop of true essential oil, they can label it as “Pure.” France exports 100 times more Lavender than it produces. How is this possible? Only if the lavender is cut and diluted with other ingredients.

PERFUME GRADE

Most oils found in natural food and bath shops are “perfume grade.” This means that the distillation method has likely utilized chemicals to extract more oil than the plant would normally release, and therefore the bottle likely has a good percentage of chemical filler. Such oils are created primarily for profit, rather than for medicinal benefit. Perfume grade oils have been rendered toxic by distillation methods, fillers, and chemical extractions, and may cause adverse reactions.
THERAPEUTIC GRADE
Young Living Essential Oils define true “Therapeutic Grade” to mean they have been properly distilled to capture the living, intelligent chemistry of the plant. Young Living is a totally green and organic company, from seed to soil, from the water used during growing, to proper harvest time and distillation on the day of harvest. Anyone can tour the Young Living farms and view the distillation process. You cannot find this level of disclosure on any other essential oils sites. Remember, an essential oil can be “organic” and still be improperly distilled for therapeutic use.
